Learning Objectives

• Construct a dual-focus safety plan that simultaneously addresses eating disorder symptom management and acute suicide prevention, moving beyond standard "safety contracts" to more robust, collaborative crisis interventions.
• Identify the neurobiological and psychological factors that contribute to the elevated suicide completion rates within the ED population compared to the general psychiatric population.
• Analyze the multi-dimensional suicide risk profile of patients with eating disorders by synthesizing recent longitudinal data on "critical period" hazard ratios, demographic variances, and the "Low-Risk Paradox" to improve the accuracy of clinical risk formulations.
• Differentiate between suicide-focused interventions (CAMS, ASSIP, DBT/CBT) and traditional diagnostic-led treatments to apply a "stepped-care" framework that aligns specific evidence-based protocols with a patient's level of care, clinical drivers, and eating disorder symptom trajectory.
• Define the concept of "Acquired Capability" for Suicide and explain how chronic ED behaviors (restricting, purging, or over-exercise) desensitize patients to physical pain, lowering the barrier to self-injurious behavior.
