How to Talk about the Medical Side of Eating Disorders when I'm not a Doctor

CE Hours 1.25

About this live event

Individuals with eating disorders often experience medical complications that arise directly from the illness itself. These complications can be serious and in some cases life-threatening if left unrecognized or untreated. Beyond the medical risks associated with the eating disorder, individuals may also experience complications during the reintroduction of nourishment as the body begins to heal. While many non-medical professionals are familiar with the existence of these risks, they may feel uncertain or hesitant when it comes to discussing medical complications openly and confidently with clients. In this presentation, clinicians will take an in-depth look at several of the most common medical complications seen at the outpatient level and in lower levels of care such as PHP (partial hospitalization program) and IOP (intensive outpatient program). Participants will explore why these complications occur, how they may present clinically, and how to address them with clients in a clear, compassionate, and clinically grounded way that supports safety and recovery. Additionally, this event will include information/recommendations re: when psychologists and other mental health professionals need to refer a client to a physician and/or consult with a physician.
